OTTAWA - The drug company Pfizer said Thursday it was selling more than $30 billion worth of its generic versions of the blockbuster painkiller Nexium. Analysts said Pfizer had made a more than $50 billion profit in the three years to 2011 when it sold $2 billion worth of the drug to the public.
The drug company, which makes its most popular medication, Nexium, is also about to lose sales after a $2 billion jump in sales last year, but Pfizer is still facing a patent challenge from the Food and Drug Administration. The company had lost its exclusive patent on Nexium for the drug and has not been able to launch its generic version. Pfizer has already lost its exclusive marketing rights to Nexium for about $10 billion a year.
Nexium, a generic version of the popular painkiller, is the most widely prescribed painkiller in the world, according to a new study from the drug company's medical center.
"It's a very important drug," said Sidney Wolfe, MD, director of the division of dermatology at the University of Toronto's Hospital of London. "I would love to see our company do something that can help patients get back on their feet. I think that would be a very important thing to them."
Pfizer shares fell nearly 5% in after-hours trading Thursday. Pfizer shares were down $1.17 on the news.
"It is a very important drug and we have to have a plan in place to get it on the market," said Ian Read, chief financial officer at Pfizer, "We have a very strong pharmaceutical pipeline in the pipeline and we know that we can do this."
Pfizer and the drug company said the launch of the new version of Nexium, known generically as esomeprazole, is expected in mid-April. The company has already sold the patent for about $1.6 billion worth of its generic version to the FDA in early April.
The generic version, which is approved by the FDA, is available as generic Nexium in the U. S. but has not been approved by the FDA since 2001.
The company said it will soon stop selling the drug.
Nexium is known as a "high potency" drug for pain sufferers. It is taken orally, in a pill or capsule form, with a dose of 20 mg once or twice a day. It is available in the U. in a chewable capsule or delayed-release tablet form.
The drug has been approved for use in the U. since 1993. But in 1997, the company was permitted to market a generic version called esomeprazole, which is sold by Merck under the name Nexium. It is now marketed as Nexium in other markets including Canada and Australia.
Pfizer says the drug has been linked to more than 300 reports of stomach ulcers in patients who took omeprazole for more than two years.
It is not clear whether the risk of ulcers is greater in people who take omeprazole or whether patients who have ulcers are at higher risk.
The company has not been able to sell the drug.
The drug is currently sold at a drugstore in North Carolina, which sells the brand version of Nexium. But the drugmaker said it would be selling the generic version for a much cheaper price.
The generic version of Nexium has a similar name to the one sold by Pfizer, but the drug's active ingredient is much more similar to the older version.
The company said it will launch its generic versions, including its branded version, at a much lower cost to consumers than the branded version.
The company has no plans to make the generic version of Nexium available in the U. or to produce its version on the U. market.
